Why Your Short-Term Rental Listing Needs Photos of the Neighborhood, Not Just the House
I've been photographing Airbnbs and short-term rentals in Austin and the surrounding area for almost a decade now. In that time I've watched what works change again and again — but there's one thing I keep coming back to, especially as an Airbnb owner myself: your listing photos shouldn't stop at your front door.
Most hosts hire a photographer to shoot the property. The bedrooms, the kitchen, maybe a nice shot of the pool or the porch. That's expected, and it's necessary. But it's also exactly what every other listing on the block is doing. If you want to actually stand out, you need to show guests what their life looks like outside the house too.
Guests aren't just booking a house — they're booking a trip
When someone's scrolling through listings, they're not only picturing where they'll sleep. They're picturing their whole weekend. Where they'll grab coffee in the morning. Where they'll walk to dinner. Whether there's a park nearby for the dog, or a yoga studio they can drop into before checkout.
If your listing only shows the interior, you're leaving all of that up to their imagination — or worse, up to a Google Maps search where they land on a competitor's listing instead.
What to actually photograph
This doesn't mean a random grab-bag of neighborhood snapshots. It means being intentional about what makes your location genuinely appealing, and showing it the same way you'd show off your primary bedroom or living room. Think about:
The coffee shop two blocks away that guests will inevitably Google the first morning
A standout restaurant or bar within walking distance
A yoga studio, gym, or trail if you're near one
Parks, greenbelts, or anything outdoorsy nearby
Local shops or anything that gives the neighborhood character
The goal is to answer the question every guest is quietly asking: what's it actually like to stay here?
It's a small investment that pays off in bookings
Hiring a photographer for an extra hour or two to capture the neighborhood is a small add-on compared to your full listing shoot, but the payoff is real. Location is one of the biggest factors guests filter and search by, and right now almost nobody is visually selling it. A handful of well-shot neighborhood photos can be the difference between a guest scrolling past your listing and a guest picturing themselves already there.
Your property might be beautiful. But its location is part of what you're selling too — don't leave it out of the story.
